How to make a paper gift bag – two different ways using scrapbook paper.

Let's talk about why I love scrapbook paper

I love strolling the scrapbook paper aisle at the craft store. Looking at all the paper patterns makes me almost as happy as browsing fabric patterns and colors.

But here's the problem: I'm not a big fan of scrapbook making. I simply don't have the time or patience for it.

So I always do a little happy dance when I can come up with a way to use pretty scrapbook paper on a craft other than a scrapbook.

Pretty mini gift bags made from scrapbook paper

This craft is perfect because you are only limited by the selection of paper at your local craft store. And that's a LOT of paper to choose from.

These mini gift bags are perfect for part favor bags, treat bags, small gifts, giving gift cards, and more.

I'm sharing two different style bags: one using 12×12-inch square paper and one using 8.5×11-inch rectangle paper.

Here's a quick video tutorial:

OPTION 1: gift bag made from 12×12 paper

Supplies Needed:

  • 12×12 paper
  • 18″ ruler
  • pen
  • bone folder
  • double-sided tape
  • hole punch
  • twine
  • scissors supplies needed to make scrapbook paper gift bag from 12x12 paper

How to make a mini gift bag from a 12×12 sheet of paper

  1. Lay the paper face-down on your work surface.
  2. Measure from corner-to corner diagonally. Mark off a dot 4.25 inches away from each of the four corners.
  3. Fold each corner of paper in so that the corner tip meets the nearest 4.25-inch mark. Do this on all 4 corners, and then smooth the paper flat again.
  4. Fold each corner tip in to meet the furthest 4.25-inch mark. Fold each corner tip in to meet the furthest 4.25-inch mark
  5. Do this on all 4 corners, and then smooth the paper flat again. This will create an even grid of folded lines on the paper. Grid made from pre-folding the paper
  6. Fold each corner flap in and secure with a piece of tape. Fold each corner flap in and secure with a piece of tape
  7. Then begin folding up the four long edges between the corner triangles. Make sure the corner of one triangle meets the corner of the triangle next to it. This will form a cube. Fold up the long edges to form the cube seams Fold up the four corners of the cube
  8. Smooth down the four cube seams and secure all paper layers in place with tape.
  9. Punch two holes along the top edge of two opposite cube edges. Run twine through the holes and tie a double knot on the inside of the bag to form handles.

And here's the finished bag:

How to make a mini gift bag from an 8.5×11 sheet of paper

  1. Lay the paper face-down on your work surface – in landscape orientation.
  2. Measure 3.5 inches from the left edge of the paper. Fold the right edge of paper in to meet the 3.5-inch mark. Fold in the right side of the paper
  3. Then measure 1 inch in from that right paper edge, and make a small mark on the printed side of the paper. Fold the left edge of the paper over to meet that 1-inch mark.
  4. Fold both edges smooth. Secure the seam between paper edges with tape, creating a paper tube. Secure the paper seam with tape
  5. Measure up 1.5 inches from the bottom paper edge. Use this as your seam guide to fold the bottom paper edge up. This is the beginning of the gift bag bottom. Fold up the bottom edge of the paper
  6. Separate the two bottom paper edges and fold in the corners to create triangles. Separate the two bottom paper edges and fold in the corners to create triangles
  7. Fold in the top long edge and the bottom long edge, securing with plenty of tape. This finishes the bottom of the gift bag.
  8. Stick your hand into the top opening of the bag to puff out the sides.
  9. To secure the bag closed, fold down the top edge and punch two holes. Secure with a piece of twine or ribbon tied into a simple bow.
